The Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Dr Ipalibo Harry- Banigo has commended ND Refineries limited, a subsidiary of Niger Delta Exploration & Production Plc (NDEP), for the Company’s policies on the Environment and Community Relations.
Dr. Harry-Banigo made this commendation during an official visit she paid with some members of the State House of Assembly and Officials of the State’s Ministry of Environment to ND
Refineries’ (Ogbele Modular Refinery) Complex on Friday 6th March 2020.
She further commended the Company for the Modular Refinery at Ogbele which she said would aid the State Government’s quest to showcase the investment and use it as a reference to discourage illegal refineries in the region, while safeguarding lives of the people of Rivers State as well as protect the environment.
`We want to discourage illegal refineries, save lives and ensure a safe and clean environment. We are also interested in knowledge and technology transfer and job creation opportunities for our teeming youths,’ Dr. Harry-Banigo said.
The General Manager, Refineries and Projects, ND Refineries Limited, Mr. Femi Olaniyan, who walked the delegates through the facilities while on a tour of the Refinery Complex, said that ‘NDEP Plc is a wholly Nigerian-owned Independent and fully integrated energy company, with local content technical and managerial know-how.’
He noted that the Company’s quest to promote energy sustainability and independence, while also ensuring Environmental protection, informed its decision many years ago, to eliminate gas flaring in its operations.
As early as 2006, Mr. Olaniyan said, “our Company decided to eliminate gas flaring. A gas processing plant was built and commissioned as far back as 2012.
“We are the only independent Nigerian company supplying gas to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility in Bonny Island here in Rivers state and we have so far supplied over 80 billion Standard Cubic feet (Scf) of gas to the facility”, he added.
He further said the Ogbele Mini Refinery started in 2011 as a 1,000 barrels per day Modular crude oil processing facility with only one product stream, adding that the Company commenced an expansion of the Plant in 2018.
He said the expansion project was to transform the refinery into a fully fledged facility processing up to 11,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Products from the refinery will from now on include; Jet fuel, Diesel, Marine diesel, Naphtha and Heavy Fuel Oil, adding that the expanded facility, is now completed and ready to commence full operations imminently.
Mr. Olaniyan further said that the Company, has recorded zero lost time injuries till date and has utilized 60 percent of its labour work force, both skilled and unskilled, from the adjoining host communities around the Company’s operating areas.
He also said the Refinery was contributing towards improving local supply of quality petroleum products including Diesel; thus supporting import substitution, and in the forefront of propelling Nigeria towards attaining Energy Independence.
‘We produce diesel in commercial quantity for customers drawn from various parts of the Country and up to the North East; North West; Abuja; Lagos, among others,’ he added.
